• Guadalajara will host the 2011 International Congress Towards Cities Without Auto, it announced this morning in York, UK, under the first day of IX Congress activities. A delegation of Guadalajara was present to receive the baton.
Today was the official announcement in York, UK: Guadalajara will host the next International Congress Towards Car Free Cities. This morning Randall Ghent Carfree Network coordinator and one of the organizers of the event gave the welcome and the news. Among the audience response was positive and even specialists and JH Crawford, author of the renowned book Cities Without Cars, were enthusiastic about the relevance of the event will be in Mexico for Latin America.
On Friday June 25 a group of activists came to York from Guadalajara where since Monday 28 and during a week will be the IX International Congress Towards Car Free Cities. The delegation is composed of Étienne Von Bertrab, Jesus Soto and Carlos Felipe Reyes of the group City for All, one of several groups that advocate for policy guidance and practices towards sustainable urban mobility.
Participation of Guadalajara will be about strengthening ties with scholars, activists and international authorities, while receive the baton to the turn of Guadalajara.
The proposed title for the X Congress Guadalajara is "Building Cities for People for the People," which suggests the importance of empowering citizens to transform urban environments. Bridging the gap between the authorities and those who inhabit the city and suffer the consequences of the-often-wrong choices.
On the first day of activities of the IX Congress in York, the conference addressed issues such as the recovery of streets to the people through community planning process between designers, engineers and residents, to a first approximation to the psychology of dependence the car. Afternoon
classrooms became debates and exhibitions arguments on social, environmental or even economic case for sustainable mobility in urban environments.
